Steering Valve Rebuild

I have a 1969 Ford Torino that the steering valve drips. I bought the kits from NAPA to rebuild the valve. Has anyone on The Ford Barn ever rebuilt one of these? I'm mainly wanting to know what not to do and how hard of a job this is. What adjustments need to be made when reinstalling the valve. I have some Hydraulic knowledge from working on lift trucks and know that everything should be kept very clean. I have tried some Lucas stop leak and it has got better but still drips enough that I keep a pan under the car to keep the garage floor clean. The cylinder is dry around the rod end so I know it's not the cylinder.

Its been almost 20yrs since I rebuilt the one in a 78 Granada I was driving at the time. If you have experience in fork lift hydralics I'm sure you can do it with no problems. Keep it clean like you said, but more important is make sure you put the ps lines in the correct positions. You will have a "rude awakening" if you mix them up. Dont ask me how I know.

Oh, I already know what happens when you mix up the lines. I replaced the cylinder lines and got them on backwards. The steering wheel went crazy going back and forth on its own. This used to happen on the forklifts if you mixed up the lines on the steering valve.

I rebuilt the valve on my 64 Fairlane 30 years ago; It took two kits from the Ford dealer to get all the parts to do a complete rebuild. I don't know if the NAPA kit is complete or not. As I recall, it was very simple to do the rebuild. Good luck!

Yeah, I had to buy 2 kits to have all the parts that I will need.
