Starter switch finish

I have a car that was assembled in March of '29 I think. It came with a 5/8" shaft. The starter and switch are painted black. I am retoring both and I wondered what the original finish of the starter switch was. It was plain steel under the black paint. thanks Bill G

According to the "current" MARC/MAFCA Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards: "The switch was either black enamel or cadmium plated."

All Model A's built after October 1928 came with a 5/8" starter. I have seen some used starters with the black paint over cad plating on the starter switches, but would imagine that was done by someone during a repair or rebuild. I paint some of the 1928 square starter switches, but like to plate the later switches.

Yes, when the new 2 tooth steering was introduced in February 1929 the starter band screw, for clearance reasons, had to face the block rather than the steering box.
