The fitting by you distributor was probably for a water temp gauge. Get some part numbers off the block, heads, front cover, and somebody can the help you identify it.
If the plug holes are large ( 18mm ), use Motorcraft BSF-42 or equivalent. If small ( 14mm), use ASF-42 or equivalent.

thanks, i looked for nmbers but didnt find any, i need to pull the starter off and look behind it.
the plugs are large.

Ok, I hope I am remembering this correctly......the lower thermostat housing bolt on a 289 is fairly or easily accessible. On the 302 it is totally behind the water pump and much more difficult to access. The 302 is a longer stroke, which I believe caused the block to be a bit taller. I think yours is a 289. Ron

The links I posted should help.It is common to use early 289 heads on a 302 to boost compression and to have adjustable rocker arms,I have a 1984 302 with 289 Hi-Po heads myself.

You are thinking of a 351 which has a taller deck height.
