Shoebox oil filter canister

I changed the oil and filter in my 1951 Ford yesterday. The lid to the oil filter canister was "stuck" on so I had to tap it gently to remove it. When I replaced the gasket that came with the filter cartridge, the lid did not seem to go down very far on the canister, which promps my question: Is there a particular
orientation of the lid, or can I install it in any orientation?

Incidentally, the lid was sealed to the mounting bolt with RTV. I removed the RTV and used an annealed copper gasket to seal the mounting bolt to the lid.

Make sure there is not a double gasket inside the lid preventing it from fully seating.
Check to make sure there is no damage or deformation of the top edge of the cannister or the lid. It should just slip on after inserting the gasket inside the lid.

I removed the old gasket and cleaned the interior of the cap before inserting the new gasket.
