got back from york and carlisle and harbor freight with my thermo scan thermomator started the old 55 merc let it idle for 45 mins. gauge moved between 3/4 and hot  shot the temp of the thermostat housing it read 160:rolleyes: shot the rad it read 140 :D shot the heater hose at the firewall 125 ;) still no thermostat should i replace it also added a shroud and am adding a flex fan this weekend guess its time for a gauge replacement thanks for the imput

For some unknown reason, Y block temp senders are at the rear on the head. Yes, it will give you a clue, but I want to know the temp right at the thermostat. That should be the hottest place in the system. In all the years I have messed with 54's and 55's, if the dash gauge is anywhere near the actual engine temp, its just a accidental.

I would replace the gauge and put the thermostat back in. The shroud is a good idea as well, As for flex fan be careful which one you get preferably not aluminum.
