Roadster tack rail

What do people use for the roadster tack strip? Does everybody just use wood nowadays? The metal surrounding the original cardboard type material is not in very good shape on mine.

Mine has a steel U-shaped channel filled with some kind of hard compressed cardboard type material. So is mine not original? It's a 30-31.

Yes, yours (as described) is an original piece of equipment! As that is not reproduced, to my knowledge, what is available thru suppliers....is wood of some type(some in three piece configuration). My original was pretty badly deteriorated and unusable, but the wood replacement worked fine.

Hoarse Whisper's original wood is not original. The U shaped steel filled with cardboard is original as Hardtimes said. I filled my original steel nailer with short pieces of oak glued together. So far it's working fine (3 years).

I faced the same situation with my roadster. I purchased the wood sections that replaced the original metal channel. Then on one of my “outings to local shops”, I took the Metal channel to a car upholstery shop that installs convertible tops. They said they could fill the insides with the modern plastic material that they use for a nail strip. I had that done and the cost was about the same as for the wood. Because the channel is larger than on modern cars, it took three stacks of the plastic strips.

So now, I have a new wood tack rail for a 30-31 roadster that I’ll let someone have for a very cheap price.

My roadster didn't have one when I got it. I bought a new wood kit and it had a three piece wood tack strip. I didn't like the three piece wood tack strip and figured that an original one piece metal strip would be better and give the body more strength.

I found and purchased an original metal clad tack strip on treE Bay. The filler was pretty much shot. I dug out the remaining filler and refilled it with short strand fiberglass filler. It works.
