Restoration Qs...gas gauge shield

What is the best(correct) way to restore the " shield ", the nickle plated,
painted black( with the line through the hole ), when you view the gas
gauge?

Polish the ring, place a thin strip of "scotch" tape, spray gloss black, remove tape when dry. As gas does not come in contact with the indicator any black paint will do.
