remove radiator , fuel pump and viberation damper, unfasten cover from block and pan, water pump stays on cover, you might tear the pan gasket when removing cover, if you do you have 3 choices, make a new piece that goes on the front of the pan and cover, use a product called gasket maker to repair the gasket or use it to make a new front part of gasket, or remove the pan and replace the whole gasket, i have done the first two and have had good results

If you buy a front cover gasket set, it will have a new cork pan gasket to cover just the front, the big cover gasket, and a new front seal. These covers have no dowels to locate it. Put the new seal in, put the cover on loose, install the damper well oiled to locate the cover in the seal, then tighten the bolts.

There is a bolt holding the cam gear on. Keep the spacers and washers under that bolt in order. Lay them out and take a picture.

don

i've seen a few post's around about y blocks

and it looks like a can of worms.

something about 'thrust washers' and

a retainer plate.

i sure will take pic's if i want to take it out

before manual gets here!:)

getting timing cover off and cleaning it

will keep me busy for a good while.

There is nothing scary about working on y blocks. They are a very simple and uncomplicated engine. They are very much like any other ford v8 before they started going aluminum and/ or overhead cam with computers controlling everything. The thing with the y block is that it saw the start of a great line of overhead valve engines. It got left behind because people thought it had limited performance potential. How wrong they were when you look at the achievements of Ted Eaton. Who ever thought that you could get 500HP+ from a street able Y.
Enjoy.

i had to come up with my one tip!:)

i will make sure all the timing cover bolts

are out.

then knock on it with a 2 x 4 until

it breaks loose.

same as taking bellhousing off of

my little Fordomatic FX.
