How do you remove the brake wedge on the 1934 mech. brakes? Do I remove the smooth cover that is on the drum side? If so, how do you get a hold of it? Thanks for any info. that you may have.

To remove the brake adjusting wedge you will need to remove the brake drum and brake shoes so the 2 brake shoe adjusting shafts are not engaging the brake adjusting wedge. Then the brake adjusting nut is turned in until it threads itself off the inside of the backing plate and sometimes it will force the dust cap off, but most of the time you will need to hit the top of the unthreaded brake adjusting wedge with a hammer to remove the dust cap. Once the dust cap is off the brake adjusting wedge will fall into your hand!

And then you will have fun putting in a new dust cap . Hope someone on here has some hints. My efforts did not go well. the replacement seemed too big.

If you do not want to remove the shoes just take of the long spring ,Use a srew driver as a lever ,Then block open the shoes ,To refit the cap if its distorted reform it using a socket as a anvil .Then hammer with a drift in the centre to form the cup shape then grind /File the edges a little till it just fits in the retainer. Then pean over the edges.
