i`m rebuilding a `41-`42 221c.i. engine, bored to 3 3/16" x 3 3/4" stroke. mild port job, Max-1 cam, single carb. using 1.5" s.s. chevy valves. my question is does it make any sense to use johnson adjustable lifters in this engine, or should i use stock lifters and have the machinist grind the end of the valve stem to establish the proper clearance?
thanx

In this neck of the woods, the hot tip during the heyday of flathead powered racecars was to use stock lifters and grind, or build the valve stems up with brazing and then grind.

It was a mistake to use the chevy valves. They are about .060" longer. The Ford 2 piece valve is a better valve. The longer valve is difficult to grind and set lash, Not many shops can do it. This depends on the base circle and if the cam is a regrind or on a new billet. Redesigning the valve train is best left to racing engines. Also #50 spring pressure is all that's necessary for a street engine.
