How does something like this work? I've definitely wished for a rear defogger on my Falcon some mornings.

It mounts under rear shelf . Some cars already have the opening
cut, others you need to cut an opening , then mount a grille
like mounting a rear speaker.You need to run a power
wire from a switch and ground the black wire. I have a nice
Unity switch at additional cost.If you have more questions let me Know.

One other question: I have a rear speaker; do the speaker and the defroster occupy the same place?

Not sure on your vehicle , but usually the defogger unit
is mounted on the drivers side of the shelf and the speaker in the center.
If you have two rear speakers than the defogger is mounted in the center.

I remember installing these in the late 60's. It was a real pain if it didnt have the cut-out in the package tray.

I prefer to call it a "challenge ". Compared to what some of these Rodders do , It's a minor operation. Unless your on flatrate.
