how do you service a pwr steering gear box on a 1962 ford Galaxie and what type oil do you use. Tks in advance Melisa

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I do not believe Ford offered a power steering gearbox (like the Lincoln power steering) until later years.
I believe what you have in the '62 is a power steering "assist" with an outboard control valve and ram cylinder mounted on the tie-rod. In these "assist" type systems, the gearbox is actually the identical gearbox used on the standard steering systems and they simply use 90 weight gear oil.
1952 Lincoln Cosmopolitan and Capri models in later years had a true power steering system which incorporated a gearbox with integral control valve. In the mid to late 1960's Ford and Mopar adapted to a similar system.

I noticed your posts in the swap meet and sympathise with you about the control valve dilemma.
Suggestion: Try calling Fremans auto Parts in Montana or Hidden Valley auto parts in Arizona. These are salvage yards that specialize in older models. There are some other yards in Ariz and Texas also like this. Try a google search; antique auto salvage and see what you come up with.

melisa, go back and edit your profile and add where your at, some one might be near you that can help, or give you info on places near you that might be able to help you

I used straight STP in a gear box that had a bad ridge where a seal rode. The STP was slick enough to make it steer easier, but thick enough so it didnt get past the seal and mark the floor. It stayed in there as long as I owned the car, five years.

Tks all- 1. will service with 90 wt gear oil. 2. N.O. is new Orleans in my profile. 3. solved my control valve problem, after Cardone said they couldn't rebuild, found a copper sleve at CG Ford for 20 dollars and rebuilt myself. Thanks for all the good info. Melisa

After your control valve has been re-installed, don't forget to pump grease into the drag link so that the control valve sleeve will be lubricated. There should be a little grease fitting at the top on the drag link end of the control valve.

Make sure the bolts for the tie rod adjuster clamps face to the rear. If to the front, they can contact the control valve with up and down motion. Control valves have been damaged by that.
