Pinion and Ring Gear Set

I am in need of a new set of rear end gears so I am wondering which ratio to get. I will be driving in some hilly country here in Pa. I currently have 3.78:1 but I only had 90 miles on the car before I took it all apart. Also I have a v-8 clutch, lightened flywheel and I think I have a stock engine. It had good hill climbing power with just me in the car. Does anyone have an opinion on the 3.78:1 or the 3.54:1 ratios with this setup?
Thanks Bill G

A 3.54 is only 6% which will give you a 3 mph boost at 50. I live in hilly country also but a Snyder's head more than compensates. Go for the 3.54.

I have the 3.54 in my cabriolet and with two on board and travelling spares just done 900 mile plus club tour. Some of it in very hilly Scottish border country. Go for the 3.54 your stock engine will pull it easily with modern fuels. When my speedo reads 47 MPH TOM TOM says I am doing 50/51 MPH.Thats with the 9/34 speedo drive.

John in cool dull but sunny weather on the way England.

John, My wife and I took a driving tour the from London to northern Scotland and south through the lakes district in '81. It would have been even better in a Model A.

I am leaning towards the 3.54. Thanks Bill G

Bill,

Talk to Andy P in the club. He has 3.54 gears in his otherwise stock '28 Tudor and has put a good many touring miles on that.

When I changed to the T-5 trany I had to also do the rear end, so I went to the 3:54s. I could do an easy 65-70 running a warmed up B and 16 wires in Sarasota. Well all that changed when I shipped it to St.Thomas in the Virgin Islands. Now I was dealing with hills and mountains, and now the B was huffing and puffing to get up there. So be careful what you wish for, it might not be what you want. Glad to be back in Florida. Iceman
