Original paint code help

Hey everyone need a little clarity. My 1962 Monterey Custom has a paint code of I on the plate. Most of the literature i've found doesnt show that as an available option on this year Mercury. Found some Ford literature that says it was Castillon Gold Metallic for that year. Ive owned the car almost 30yrs and I always thought the two tone on it was original with some minor body work that I could see. She is black on the bottom and faded gold/tan up top. Has anyone seen this paint code used on the Mercury? Or seen an original one color car get a two tone paint job from the dealer? It has black/white vinyl interior with gold strips so I always assumed it was to match the two tone paint. But we all know what assumptions get you. Thx for any input.

As far as two tone paint schemes go - if you haven't done so already, a google image search for '62 Mercury Monterey sales brochures would probably help. When I google "1962 Mercury Monterey", I see a few two tone cars pop up, but the '62 Monterey had trim that sort of lends itself to a two tone scheme, so I suspect some people tried to turn their early '60's car into a late '50's car by painting it two tone. Sales brochures probably give a better idea of what was actually offered. My brief search didn't turn up any '62 Montereys in two tone in brochures. I only found a two tone Meteor in a brochure, and by that year the Meteor was a mid-size car...and the two tone was roof only. Keep looking, though, you might find something.

I'm interested in your question because I have a '61 Monterey, which is similar to your car. In the years I've owned mine I haven't seen any '61's in two tone. They may exist, but I think the two tone fad had died out by the early 1960's. Check this out.
