oil deflector for timing chain

I am putting together my new eng for my coupe, (292 with 312 crank and rods) and cannot for the life of me figure out how to put on the oil deflector that bolts on to the cam retainer and oils the timing chain. There does not seem to be enough clearance behind the gear for it. the new chain is a double roller. chain and gears are all new. any one run into this before ? am I doing something wrong. the eng. is at my brothers shop about 50 miles away so I won't be touching it or be able to see it for a few days, so any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks----Jim

Jim:

It does not bolt to the cam retainer. There is a separate tapped hole for it with another hole for the alignment tab to sit in. Ford eliminated the deflector in later years, your block may not have those holes.

Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate it. this eng. is being built with parts from several different engines, and I it has been several months since I tore them down and I just could not remember how that deflector went on. the exploded view pictures I have are not that clear as to how it bolts on. I will have to ck and see if the block I have has the bolt hole or not. maybe best to do as Ole Don suggests, just don't want to make the grove to small and starve the chain of oil, but don't want to make it to large and risk reduced oil press due to excess leakage . thanks for all your help.----Jim

The three blocks here have no extra holes to bolt it on which seems odd, as I have one with my 56 312 parts, and one with Jims parts, just nowhere to bolt it on other then the retainer plate.

The oil deflectors for the Y-Block timing chains were discontinued during the 1956 model year. The fuel pump counterweights were also discontinued during the same time frame. Corporate bean counters obviously got involved and decreed that some of those extra engineered pieces on the Y engines were cost prohibitive and were not needed for warranty purposes.

On occasion I will drill the later model blocks for the timing chain oil deflector and use them. They do a good job of directing the oil from the passenger side bank onto the lower timing gear which then gets carried back up to the upper gear by way of the timing chain.

Thanks for all the information everyone. I went out and checked the only block I have here at home, which is still a standard bore ECZ 292 block. It has the extra hole for the deflector. now that I see it , I can see how it is supposed to go on, and vaguely remember taking it off. I have not worked on any Y- Blocks for over 20-25 years until last year and some things I forget. so thanks again to everyone.

Thanks for the info Ted. I see where the hole is supposed to be by the bolt boss cast in on the back side of the block. I have your roller rockers, so probably won't be getting much oil from the stock upper oiling draining down. I did groove the block behind the cam bearing so should have plenty of oil to the top. I will have to rethink whether I should drill for the chain oiler.
