Helping a friend get his newly acquired T up and running right. First time to drive it I had the park brake straight up and it was in neutral as should be. Pushed all way down for low, got to moving and reached down to let brake down while holding clutch just as it was but the trannie changed to high. Got to fooling with it had here is what I notice. I can get neutral with park brake but not with clutch peddle. Tried it several times sitting still, no matter where I have the clutch pushed with my foot, the car goes in high when I put park brake forward. What is the problem, free neutral? I wouldn't think so.

It's weird. I've been inside those transmission a couple times and I'm actually rebuilding one of mine now. But when I hear of these kind of problems I'm not sure how to respond. I would think that doing what J Franklin is suggesting is the right way to start. One of the first things I was going to suggest was pull off the inspection plate to the top of the transmission and check that the pedal shafts are actually pulling the bands up around the drums like they should and also check to see if the pedals are adjusted correctly.

I would first look at the link between the clutch pedal & the "control shaft". It may be way out of adjustment, worn or have fallen off. That would give you the symptoms you described.

Makes sense Jack. That's a part I really haven't had to do anything with yet. It came to mind earlier but I wasn't sure if it could be the cause or not. Hopefully he'll let us know how things work out.

That low/neutral linkage was one of Henry Fords mysteries' that just happened to work. Nothing but slop, mis-alignment and over center geometry, but if its out of adjustment, no noodrel! ws

This is a puzzler for sure. The lever moves the linkage and the pedal. Their connected. Does your pedal move with the hand brake? Doesn't sound like some thing internal if he gets N with the E brake handle. External linkage I think but what I have no idea.

The linkage is prob not connected.high is disengaged by the park lever wedge.no big deal.just look under the floor

The linkage between the low gear peddle and the clutch linkage is too short. You can tell it has been broke and reattached to the clevis. It just doesn't move the linkage far enough for neutral. I suppose previous owner just used it that way cause there is no way to get neutral with the peddle.

Well there's no way that can be repaired. Go ahead and put the vehicle on a trailer and give the guy some money and ship it over to me. I'll dispose of it appropriately. Oh and please sign the title and send it along with. I'll make sure you'll never worry about it again. LOL

Seriously, I'm glad you were able to figure out what the problem is. Now fix it and get back to us and let us know how it goes.
