Mitchell OD in ‘30 Phaeton?

Has anyone installed a Mitchell OD in a ‘30-‘31 Phaeton? I’m concerned because of that storage compartment under the rear floor.

Re: Mitchell OD in ‘30 Phaeton?

Do you actually have a '30 phaeton that you're asking about or is this speculative? Because I have one and it doesn't have a recessed tray under the rear floor. My understanding is they only did that in '28 and early '29.

Re: Mitchell OD in ‘30 Phaeton?

Yes, one of our club members has a '30 phaeton with a Mitchell O/D.

Best bet for fitment is to call Steve Mitchell directly with your question. He makes several different combinations of input/output shaft length, he can advise you on what fits what car.

The "typical" configuration will not fit slant windows. The special slant window configuration will fit anything except (I believe) Victorias and A400. I've not heard of any particular fitment issues with phaetons. But call Steve to confirm.

Of course, if you or someone else has fitted an additional lower storage compartment then he'd need the dimensions of that to determine which unit to spec. I have heard of folks adding a recessed box under the rear seat. Seems to me there was an article in one of the national club magazines about that a few years ago.

Re: Mitchell OD in ‘30 Phaeton?

When I came to fit the Mitchell ot my '29 phaeton, that box uder the floor was in the way. The car is a driver (big time) and NOT a show car so I had no problem removing the box and replacing it with my own that sat behind the O/D and straddled to torque tube like saddle bags. My new box goes a long way back, even under the rear seat and is quite deep at the back. I carry tools and spares in there. It puts the weight down low and just in front of the rear axle helping handling when the trailer is putting weight on the car just behind the rear axle. It is also out of the sight of any undesirables.

No, I retained the existing lid on the original box but made it longer - as far as I could go in front of the axle. When we are travelling, we have the back seat loaded with all sorts of struff. I didn't wnat to have to take it all out to get into the box, just the stuff on the floor.

I assume the car is RHD?
In that case where did it come from?
The wood floor is Australian.

Re: Mitchell OD in ‘30 Phaeton?

My car is RHD from Argentina. There is a box under the front seat and extending rearward. It is unique (as far as I know) to phaeton’s because it is intended for the side curtains (I suppose a roadster has one I don’t know for sure one way or the other).

Re: Mitchell OD in ‘30 Phaeton?

Hello, not exactly to answer original question, but the 31 roadster I have has the “curtain box “under the front seat. Not o sure if it’s the same as a phaeton , does extend under the floor past the cross sub rail.

Yup, Australian RHD car with Ausie hardwood floor altrhough I think it was replaced during restoration. I'm pretty sure the car was made in Canada and assembld here with some uniquely Austrakian fittings - enough to drive American judges crazy!!! :)
