Manifold/carb recommendation

Currently have a COAE 9425-F intake manifold and a Motocraft D4DE 2 barrel carb on a 292 Y Block. I'm thinking about going to a 4 barrel carb. What manifold and carb would be my best option? Thanks for help.

You’ll be looking for an ECZ - 9425- B. The A model 4 barrel unit is for the older small square bore carbs. Those are out there (teapot Holleys and Carter’s) but hard to come by and expensive. The B model fits a modern carb.

Recent postings on here and yblocksforever seem to like the Summit Autolite clone for general drive ability, but Holleys and Edelbrock work fine.

They all require a 57 up distributor with mechanical advance. If you don’t have that, ask more questions.

The summit carburetors are dual-feed on the passenger side, like current Holley 4150 carburetors. You might want to look at the Quick Fuel Slayer 450 cfm carburetor; it has a single inlet on the driver side, like Holley 4160 carburetors. If your engine is otherwise stock, you'll want a 4-barrel carburetor between 390 & 500 cfm/w vacuum secondaries.

Go to Holley's website and take a look at their factory-refurbished carburetors. They come with the same warranty as new/w accessories, and are considerably cheaper. If the carburetor you want is not in stock, you can request an email when one is available.

What is the car? Why do you think you need to change it? How much do you drive it per year?

My car is a '54 Merc Monterey hardtop. I'm in northern Maine so it's a nice day or cruise ride. The Merc is a grandfather/grandson project and we enjoy discussing and researching upgrades such as this. We're also thinking dual master cylinder, front disc brakes, and possibly adding power seats and windows from our parts car. We have rewired the Merc and repaired the power steering. The carb on the car now is a hack job and should be replaced so naturally we started talking upgrades. The real joy is my grandson will be a lifelong car guy with a love for vintage Mercurys.

I’m trying to be helpful, not a pita. You’ve established that the oem 256 had been replaced by a 292, right? Whole engine, or does it have some original parts transplanted?

I’m getting back to the distributor question, and what you’ve got now. If you’ve been down this road and know, sorry. But I’ve seen way too many mismatched carbs and distributors on what were earlier motors, or updated a bit haphazardly.

Pictures or the engine would help if you’re not sure. And we always love pictures of the car. Especially Merc’s. Great project. And I’m envious, my granddaughters aren’t old enough to start them yet.

I have a 55 Tbird. It left the assembly line with power windows and a power seat (all 55 Tbirds were equipped with a power seat as standard equipment, a manual seat wasn't an option). I obtained manual seat adjusters from a member of this forum and converted my power seat to manual. I would prefer manual windows as well. If you're converting to power seat & windows (I wouldn't), are you going to use 6v components?

I did not Know all 55 T-birds were power seat equipped. My 57 Fairlane has the 4-way power seat, and I am not sure I prefer the thing to a manual seat. It was kind of a bit of engineering how the thing works. Uses a reversing switch, and the worm drive is lifetime lubricated with some sort of coating. Interesting.

Here's A picture of my '54 Merc. The hood's off now because 3 of 4 bolts attaching the hood to the hood brace were stripped.

Gene, my 55 Tbird was equipped with a Fordomatic, power seat (all 55s), and power windows (optional-roll-up windows standard), but no power brakes or power steering.

Neither my wife's 2015 Toyota Rav4 nor my 2017 Ram 1500 has a power seat, I don't miss it.

If a 6v car/w power windows is converted to 12v, the windows will go up and down very fast; this could injure an unsuspecting person or damage the windows.

Just wondering, the car (beautiful BTW) has had an engine transplant and most likely a 1961/62 FYB (going by intake CASTING ID) with a much later F2150 2V CARB.

Do you want to modify just to make it a more enjoyable driver or wanting to keep a somewhat original appearance of the engine compartment?

Any chance of an engine compartment shot(s)?
