Mallory Unilite crab dist

I have a Mallory Unilite electronic crab dist. Where can I get instrustions on how to set the total advance. I know you loosen the 2 torx screws under the top plate and move the bottom plate in the slotted hole. I know by useing a drill bit or something like that the right thickness, you can set the total advance a known degrees. This is a new dist with no instrutions and the slot is quite long and I think it's to far ahead for this over 9 to 1 ratio engine. This engine is going in a vintage roundy round car and I hate to see him blow the engine right off quick because of to much advance. Also I've got to find out if this dist uses a resistor, and what they recommend for a coil. What ever happened to the old points and cond? Thanks Walt

Walt,

The new units should come with a little red plastic tool for advance adjustment. The tool allows the adjustment of "max" degrees and the spring tabs are bendable for advance rate. For some reason most come with a chevrolet 36 degree advance rate in them.
I can machine adjust to whatever spec you would like.. $48 bucks and we pay shipping, will return the same day as recieved.

Thanks Babba, I spent about 2 hours on the tube this afternoon, just looking up Mallory Unilite stuff. I found a site (probably couldn't find it again) and it gave all the advance curve info from the factory for a bunch of Mallory Unilite dist. My dist no. is (3772001H) and it says it cames from factory Ford Flathead set at 16* at 3600 rpm. You don't suppose that is dist degrees and the engine would be 32 degrees. I'd like to start this engine off with about 15-16 degrees. It's going to have pretty high compression. What do you think? Thanks Walt

I would think they are referring to distributor degrees and 3600 is way too late. Need lighter springs.

when I ran my stock car, which had an engine similar to yours I found that a fixed advanve of 17 degrees worked best. I found that having a machanical advance caused a hesation off the corners. I also ran a 2 GC with no power valve and jetted for power. This took several years of putzing, but in the end it worked out well

That's what I was thinking Ron. This engine is going to have some pretty high compression, better than 9 to 1 he'll probably be running the best pump gas he can get, and that's not much. I'm starting out with three 94's with with 49 jets and 4.5 power valves. The power valves probably won't make much differance, he'll be pedel to metal most of the time. I'm going to try to get him to get some 100L ave gas. I'm going to run that Edelbrock intake that takes the 94 carbs. My dragster has a 276 and turns over 5000 every trip, smooth as a smelt, with three 94's no power valves and 51 and 52 jets. Of course a dragster is wide open all the time. A stock car has to let up and step on it once in a while, so I think the 4.5 power valves might be ok. Going to get some 6 something gears. Mostly 1/4 mile tracks and a few 3rd. Do you want to drive it Ron? Walt

Wouldnt surprise me at all to see it be 16 degrees distributor (32 engine)
You dont have to change the springs on this one the tabs are adjustable by bending in and out. One spring is lighter than the other (low speed) and the heavy spring is your high speed..

we ran a stock 8ba distributor with no advance, set inital at 17 degs. Start up was spin the engine on 12v then hit the on switch. Worked for years. Ran 5.42? on 1/3 mile track. Yes I'd like to drive it, but I'd have to take the Begal along with me to bark at me when to turn.

Hi Babba, you don't have to bend the tabs on this one, you just loosen 2 screws on the plate under the top plate and slide it one way or the other, and it covers or opens the slot that the tabs come up through so the advance don't go so far or further whitch way you want it. With a dist machine you can do it in 2-3 min. I guess I'll have to install it on the engine and use my adjustable timing light ans see how far it's going. Thanks Walt

I understnd the method to change the advance limit is using the slot.
Then to change the rate of advance the springs either have to be changed or just bend the tabs.
There are two adjustments, one for the maximum ( thats the screw) and the other is for the rate and thats either the springs ( change them) or just bend the tabs to change the spring tension.
Yours is different from that ?????

Hi Babba, you right, I was just thinking about the total advance. It's hard for me to figure out what would be right for the rate of advance. Most of the old Fords 11A units I believe are all in before 2500. This engine is not going to spend much time uder 2500. Do you think the rate ought to be changed on this Mallory? Thanks Walt

Typically the flatheads are set up all in at 2500 to 2800 rpm...
