Loud braking noise!!

I back my 31 Model A Tudor out of the garage and brake to a stop in my turnout. No problem -no noise. But when i drive to the end of my driveway and brake... I get a loud VERY disconcerting clang, ker bang sound from the front end -probably brakes. But for the rest of the day as I drive around - the brakes work fine and make no noise. When I come home I drive into the garage and park it. 1, 2, 4 days later when I back out, I get the same one time ker bang sound just only one time. The rest on my driving has no noise from the brakes. I have been tightening up the front end. Last nite when I backed out of the garage-I did not touch my brakes and used the e-brake to stop in the turn out. When I started up in 1st gear and hit the brakes---there was no kerbang.

WHY??
i will say during my riding around -if I stop and put it into reverse and go forward and brake -the brakes do not ker bang.

Have you tried backing into the garage to park?
what modifications from stock original?
have you had someone outside the car waiting to listen— possibly even setting up video on the ground and driving up to it to help in locating the source— it may take a while and several tries.

I have not backed into the garage. I think that duplicates my backing out of the garage and then going forward. But i will try it. No modifications on the Tudor. I will have some one video the sound as I drive past them.
Thanks

Young, welcome to the forum "kerbang" is that a technical Ford term?:p

It's possible you don't hear the brake noise at higher speeds because of the extra noise.

I would check all the bolts in the backing plates, and check the nut on the bottom of the backing plates at the 6 o'clock position on the fronts and make sure they did not loosen up.

Also, raise the front up by the axle and wiggle the tires back and forth, left to right and wiggle top and bottom. This will test if your axle nut/bearings are loose and test the king pins.

MMM just throwing this out there..........How is your wishbone ball? And is it the original style or the rubber ball type?

I am with those who are suggesting something is loose. Check all the fasteners and any other thing that may be loose. A crowbar can be useful to check things like the perches or shackles.

This too was my very first impression. I had this problem a little, not a kerbang but more of a clunk. A check of the radius ball revealed a rubber replacement assembly that was completely kaput (another technical term). I replaced it with the original style kit and no more problem.

I believe it is an original type ball. A model A restorer did it. I have checked for tightness. I checked the 8 bolts for the backing plates. I took off the cotter pins and tightened those 8 nuts. Both spring perches are snug with the front axle.

I note that looking at the spring shackle bar holding the spring shackles - the bottom nut of the shackle is tight against the spring shackle bar and the bottom of the spring. But both top nuts and spring shackle bar are not flush with the perch. On both top sides there is a 1/8 to 1/4 inch gap. I tried to tighten one but could not. Some one told the bolts were shoulder bolts . But the bottom one is nice and tight.
I have noticed that it happens when i back out of the garage. When i drive around and back up for a short distance it does not go ker bang when i drive forward and brake. BUT if i back up about 50 ft and brake about 4 times and then go forward it ker bangs more frequently.
Does this site allow videos? I shot one and the right front wheel really shakes when it Ker bangs.

look at the gap at the shackles then move to make noise and look to see if position changes
or fill the gap — perhaps wind some thin rope into the gap and see if the noise goes away.

It looks like my last reply did not register. The 2 front shackle bars holding my shackle together do not press in all the way. I mean the shackle bar is not touching the side of the spring perch. The shackle bars touch at side of the spring. There is a space of 1/8-1/4 between the shackle bar and the side of the PERCH. Some cars seem to have the space and others do not.
Model A Judging Standards page 4-4 revised 2011 says NOTE: DO NOT TIGHTEN THE CASTLE NUTS HARD AGAINST THE HANGAR BAR AS THIS WILL CAUSE RAPID WEAR OF THE BAR & SPRING. INITIALLY SNUG THE NUTS UP & BACKOFF ONE (1) TURN. CONTINUE TO LOOSEN THE NUTS TO ALIGN THE COTTER PIN SLOTS WITH THE HOLES IN THE SHACKLE.

So that implies to me ... the hangar bars should be still flush against the perch and the spring. BUT what about that gap?
Any suggestions?
