install mirror

Does the driver fender have to come off to install a mirror on a 59? If my car had one, there are no holes to tell.

thanks in advance

On my 55 Sunliner the only way to remove the fender mounted mirror was remove the fender. It certainly won't go back there.

If the mirror is on the fender, it is so far away it shows very little of what may be behind you. My 55 has the outside mirror right next to the drivers window.

IIRC, starting in '58 Ford moved the (slightly larger) mirrors to the rear of the fender instead of the front of the door. When the optional passenger outside mirror became available / more popular in '56/'57 it couldn't be mounted in a 'matching' spot on the passenger door and be usable because the driver's view to it was blocked by the window posts.

<--- note the mirror location in this photo

So... should I mount it on the door then? Most of the pics I've seen had it on the fender. Mine has no holes to tell where to put it.

Outside mirrors were an option & not 'required' until some year (I don't know when) and your car may not have originally had one.
Here's a link to a bunch of pictures. Check them out and do what you think will be best. If you've got a helper, sit in the driver's seat and have them hold the mirror in a couple spots until you find the one you like.

My '59 has it on the driver's door only. I am adding one to the passenger door. I can measure up the locations if you think it would help you out.

Thanks, I'd like the measurements if its not too much trouble. I guess I will try what dmsfrr said and get my wife to hold it and see what works. I was all hot to put one on and have one coming, but don't know now where to go with it.

If the car has vent or wing windows you'll want to leave room for them to operate fully.

They are unique in design and mount on the fenders. If you can find a pair in decent condition, they are about $500.00. Cheaper ones can be found, but they usually need re-chrome.

If you want cheaper Ford mirrors that will work just fine and look good, they are readily available; they still go on the fenders. And to answer your question, no the fenders do not have to come off. Mark the place you want to put them and drill and install with stainless steel sheet metal screws.

Finally measured up my door, hope it helps.
