at the machine shop this am, was shown a: sutter's crankshaft tool, ser #2150 made by fredsham mfg. co. st. louis, mo. in the original box with cutters: the gentleman who owns this tool wants to sell. i have no interest in this - i have a toy box full - for those that don't know what this is used for, you clamp the tool around the crankshaft journal run the "shavers" down and rotate the tool around the journal-shaving off the high spots - much like a crank grinder (????) - only hand operated: wish i had my camera would have taken photo's....any interest???

I once saw one of those in an active machine shop. The guy who showed me the relic said that it had been used primarily for the pre-about 1954 Chevy sixes with babbited rods and the weird spray oiling system. When something clogged, a rod would pound out and eat the crank throw almost immediately. With this tool, a shop could drop the pan on a Chevy, cut the crank pin in place, and put in a rebuilt rod without pulling the engine or taking much apart.
Cutting tool was kinda like a pipe cutter, but with a scraper blade in place of the wheel. Tighten and turn, repeat til shiny all the way around.
