Hey guys,
Took the 17 truck to its first parade and show yesterday. Decided against the parade because she keeps heatin up. It has a water pump on it as well as a very nice radiator. I know the debate over the waterpump thing. Do you guys run coolant or water wetter in your rides? Any input greatly appreciated.
On a side note, people loved the truck, I let kids sit in it and have there picture taken and crank started it for anyone that was curious to see it....won a top 25 plaque.....not bad for an old barn find.

heres a picture

Make sure your fan belt is tight and the pulley not glazed. Number one cause of overheating is a loose belt.

Run antifreeze in it, if you already don't, also, check your timing and gas quality, if that does not work,
drain the water, put in a gallon of vinigar, and fill with new fresh water, run it for a couple of weeks, and drain it, it should come out like ketchup, or think substance, depending on what was in the water jackets,
John

I have no waterpump, run straight distilled water with water pump lube to stop corrosion and I run parades all the time with no problem. You can advance the timing and richen just a tad to help it cool. If the radiator is working and the fan is working it should be fine. Many radiators thought to be good really aren't.

And by the same right I have seen many perfectly good radiators that were blamed for the overheating when in reality the belt was loose or the driver didn't know how to operate the thing.

I checked the belt and it was a little loose...tightened and took it for a spin......did better but did get hot after a few miles.....still considerately better/ I'm am thinking of ditching yhe water pump. Will also flush with vinegar and put anti freeze in it......Is 50/50 the right dilution.

Hi Doug,
Remember I'm a rookie....but I usually advance the spark to about the 8 oclock position and fuel mix is about 1 1/2 turns and adjust from there

I assume if you advance the spark any further that you sense no change in running. When running in a parade I usually pull the advance all the way down and give it an extra 1/4 turn on the gas. In normal driving I do not do this, I just look for the sweet spot. I know each car is different and each have their respective sweet spots. It sounds like you are not too far off. If you can't figure out the problem, there are a lot of Model T people by you that would be more than happy to take a look.

Thanks as always Doug......if it were't for the input from you folks .... it would be impossible to learn about the cars I've started to love. Thanks again.
