How to remove headbolts from 47 Merc.

I have installed a Fenton 2 carb intake manifold to our 1947 Merc.
flathead. Now I am trying to install a generator bracket that installs
into the driver's side head with 3 longer bolts.
I have removed the 3 nuts from the bolts(heads) and I now have 3 threaded
bolt shafts without heads. How do I remove them inorder to install
the bracket which has 3 holes and longer bolts which go into the head.

Thanks again Ford Barners,

Double nut the stud. That is, put two nuts together, tighten and turn the bottom one until the stud comes out.

Double nut with thinner jamb nuts tighten 2 nuts together and wrength the lower one,it should come out. ken ct.

Also recommend squirting copious quantities of penetrating oil or acetone/atf mixture down the sides of the stud and let soak for a few hours. If studs still are resistant, apply more penetrant and tap the aforementioned double-nut with a light hammer to assist getting the threads in the block lubed. Be patient. Keep lubing. You don't want to break a stud.

i have seen standoffs made to be used for this, by screwing them onto the exisiting studs.
they look like three longer nuts with a stud sticking out one end. but they are machined in all one piece.
i have three of them that came with an old offset generator bracket.
making three of them could be easier than getting three old studs out.
especially if you break off one (some) of those studs.

Bob, let me know if you find any 7/16 x 20 standoffs or even 7/16 x 20 coupling nuts at a reasonable price. While well-stocked hardware stores generally carry 7/16 x 20 nuts & bolts, they usually don't carry the longer coupling nuts.

If the jam nuts fail there is a special tool for removing studs. Sears among others has it. It is really designed to be used after the head is removed but it should work for your application. It will destroy the top threads when you grip there. Maybe a local car club would have one in their tools to loan.

Bob:

That fastenal part number and link didn't work for me. All I could find was a case-hardened 7/16 x 14 coupling nut. Could you please check link again.

Thanks

Grade 5 should be okay. Ford certainly didn't use grade 8 studs and bolts. I have heard they were grade 5.
