Hey i am repairing my gas tank in my 29 a and i am installing a new gas gauge assembly, the new part comes with a cork float but i want to change it to the neopream float, witch i have already purchased, my question is how do i remove the cork float and install the neopream float with out doing any damage to the new gas gauge assembly? Thanks ryan

this is my 2 cents. Put the rod that the float is on, on the elbow bend in a vise. Pull the float off and replace with your neopream float.

I squeeze the flattened end together with a vice grip, change floats, then pinch it flat again with a vice grip, or lay it on the vice jaw and hammer it using a punch.

You'll probably have to notch the new float to get it to slide on far enough past the bend in the wire. It's closed cell material and the notch won't hurt it.

I put a small washer and a spot of solder on the end after putting on the float. Do not heat to much to damage the float but be sure the solder sticks.

Hey Ryan ( you hoodlum lookin' fella)

I recently used the same float in my restoration as the old one (cork) had completely disentegrated. I placed a neoprene float after placing a small washer to hold it in place and then carefully crimped the end of the rod. Worked perfectly.

I then followed Les Andrew's Vol. 1 Model A Mechanics Handbook in adjusting the level and it worked great. I had to use a custom bent metal coat hanger to hold the float rod up to check the position, but it's great now.

GOOD LUCK......................

Just put the long section in the vise and wiggle off the cork float and slide on the neoprene one. BE CAREFUL with the new float. As I say someone mentioned above these new neoprene floats DO crack easily. I have replaced 3 corks that sank in 3 cars and the first one I did I cracked and it fell apart in my hand. They are basically like styrofoam. Then just crimp the end of the rod or even bend it 90* to the float

Just my two cents.
