How does this coolant/heater valve work?

Was at a Ford only car show today at a local
Ford dealer. Came across two Meteors (53/54). They were side by side and I spoke to both owners. The 53 had this valve attached to the PS head. The owner of the 53 wasn’t present initially, so asked the owner about the valve. He explained that it was for the heater, but oddly enough, he said his 54 didn’t have it. Looking at the disc, I’m guessing it was vacuum operated. Is this correct?

Correct, vacuum operated heater control valve. The more expensive, and most common in my experience, heaters for 52-54 Fords had a temperature compensating vacuum switch located inside the heater box. This vacuum switch is cable operated using the temperature control selection on the under dash controls. The vacuum switch is then connected to either the valve type pictured above, or a fender mounted vacuum controlled heater switch.
