High Beam Low Beam

The headlight switch knob in the center of the steering wheel has multiple positions. Like looking at the face of a clock, OFF is at 6 o'clock, Parking Lights are at 7, Low beam is at 5 and High beam is at 4.

That's assuming you have a car with High and Low (1929 and later) and the last person to wire it all up did it correctly. Two big "ifs".

Be careful if your steering switch turns hard, the tube down to your electrical switch is fairly fragile, mine rotated pretty hard moving from one position the next. took the electrical switch apart at the steering box and added a slight amount of dielectric silicone grease, just a thin layer. Now my switch at the steering wheel rotates smooth as a babies behind, all the lights work as designed, I also added the big LED headlight bulbs, two thumbs up on those.

If the light switch is difficult to turn, try the fix in the slide. If the switch turns with the steering wheel, enlarge the diameter of the recess in the steering wheel so it clears the switch handle.

Mine is different on my AA. I got hi-lo beam wires reversed at the contact plate when I replaced wiring harness. I can fix it but I’m used to it now.

The original poster's question is, in a way, "gratifying" for me. Because on my '28 model, I can't see any real difference in the headlight beam between "H" and "L" modes; the road illumination is simply poor.

So it seems this is normal.

I changed my headlight bulbs to focused LED bulbs. They are $50/bulb in the US but definitely worth it!

On one of my cars they flicker at idle but are fine at higher rpm's. The other 2 I haven't had any issues with. I have heard of other things but they have been traced back to faulty ground connections. I still run 6V positive ground on mine. FWIW

I filed the corners of the square under the switch handle to give clearance.

Hello, at the forked connector at bottom of steering column, make sure the small c clip is holding it on the rod , had it come loose and jammed the switch. Good idea to have a couple of extra clips around, easily lost.

One of the issues is the stamped steel spiders that are sold now, they don't hold the spider retainer clip as well as the old ones.

Old on left, new stamped steel on right.
