The 259 series started with the 49 Fords and was the same basic unit through 1950. The gears and clutch mechanism changed in 1951. These are side shift with a rectangular side cover. The 51 version has a clutch actuator lever attachment on the side cover. In 1952, the units changed bell housings and went to swing pedals for clutch and brake. Mercury also used them till the end of the flathead production. Ford kept using them well up into the Y-block years along with the next type.

The T86 came later in the mid 50s but is a side shift top loader type and also had the R10 overdrive as an option.

The T85 is the heavy-duty unit with the R11 overdrive. The side cover has the curved shovel shape on the bottom edge. These were used on Lincoln 337 V8s till 52 when they went to the big 317 Y-block. It was always the heavy duty unit. The other two types are light duty units. Ford used these up into the early 70s.
