Helicoil instalation in stud hole

The studs should not break into the engine's coolant jacket. Studs should go into the block hand tight, not wrenched / torqued into place.

I did notice the age but I'm too new a member to PM or email. Just hoping Dave in MN is still around. Thanks, Bruce

I have probed the hole on the head and it appears to be broken off flush with the block. I bought the truck sight unseen from a seller 1,500 miles away but the previous owner, an elderly gentleman who I do trust, told me a recent valve job had been done. That very well could be when the stud was broken.

Drilling out the stud can be problemmatic as the studs over time become work-hardened and will not easily drill out with conventional drills. At a minimum, if you elect to do it this way you should make a drill guide with the OD the diameter of the hole in the head and the ID of the drill you want to use. Or pull the head and use one of the commercially available drill guides.

If you pull the head, I'd suggest that you bypass drilling out the stud and hire someone with a portable welder to use the nut and washer method. Far less chance of you drilling off center and destroying the hole, plus it's a pretty reliable method. You may have to do it several times, but the heat/cool cycle will help break the stud loose. Most likely any experienced welder you find will already be familiar with the technique.

Too bad I'm not nearer to you, I'd come over and do it for you.
