Whats 5lb of steel and copper worth in your area? Buy it with the idea of taking it to a rebuilder and let him estimate what it will cost to fix it, then adjust the price accordingly. Total cost should not exceed $100.

Glenn--I think that Tom Wesenberg is the resident expert on the Powerhouse Generator...maybe he will see this post, or you can directly contact him.

Glenn,

It pays to remove the cover and determine if its a 5 brush or 3 brush holder. Some 5 brush have been rebuild using a 3 brush holder.
Check for a clean inside, not lots of grease and worn down brushes.
Check the brush holder to be sure its not cracked or broken.
Check the armature for wear; if good can it be turned or has it been turned so many times that its too thin to turn again.
According to the Indy Letters in 1931 Ford didn't have any more Armatures for the Powerhouse Generator rebuild.
I have found that the field coils are seldom bad, having rebuild numerous Powerhouse Generators over the years.
The last Powerhouse I pruchased at a Swap meet I got it for $ 20.oo; the brush holder was OK, the field coils OK, the case was clean (no rust pits), but the aramature, when checked , was bad.
I think $25.oo would be the maximum I would pays for the unknown condition of a PowerHouse.

Ron summed it up well, and I agree with what he said. I bought a very rusty powerhouse, but the insides were excellent. I also bought a good looking powerhouse, but the brush holder and armature were both junk.

I have fixed brush holders in 3 pieces by cleaning the broken edges and using JB Weld.
