Can anyone suggest how to remove the old float? Should I try to un-crush the rod with a pair of pliers or Dremel off the crushed part and solder the washer to the wire?
@ old31, Thank you, yes, I already have the gauge out of the tank.
@Herb Concord Ca I'll try the vice again, it keeps popping out or rotating when I tighten the vice.
In the past I have had to solder the little washer onto the end of the bail to hold on new cork or neoprene floats. Nowadays I use the toilet-bowl type floats (https://www.mikes-afordable.com/product/A9313C.html) that have a little tab-like gizmo that bends over, doesn't need either the washer or solder.
don’t “uncrush it,cut the washer with wire cutters and bend it a little to remove it,then after replacing float bend it back.
I salvaged a modern float off a modern car fuel pump unit—

Since you are replacing the float anyway, cut the float (cork or whatever) off. Then, at the end of the rod, you should only have the peened washer, correct?
OK, now, take a very small screwdriver (electronics enthusiast types will know what a "Greenie" is) and push the washer off by holding the small blade against the rod and pushing against the inner part of the washer toward the end. You may have to rotate a few times, but it will come off.
A fella from the San Diego MAC was making those brass float and sold them for ~$6. I believe he has recently passed away. I hope those are not the same ones that Mike's sells.
