Fuel Supply Issue

I would like to know which way the fuel flows through the sediment bowl on a mechanical fuel pump (on a 59AB engine). The reason I ask is that my after market micro filter located inside the glass sediment bulb may have been put in place in the wrong direction to fuel flow and that may have caused a collapse of the filter and a partial / total plugging of the flow. While driving I experienced the engine cutting out while in top gear and even when slowing down and pumping the accelerator pedal, I just made it home. Upon taking out the filter, I could not blow through the filter at all.

Thanks for the information Old Henry. My filter is not like either of the ones you are showing. Mine is clear plastic with a rubber supported nylon-like micro filter inside. Sold by Mac's. It looks like the in-line filters in snowmobiles. I would be interested in the filters you mentioned. Anyone have good luck with these?

I have had good luck with no filter. I like being able to see if anything is actually in the bottom of the settling bowl and empty it when there is. At the top of the settling bowl there is a very fine screen through which the fuel passes after settling in the bowl before going through the pump. I'm quite confident that anything that's not heavy enough to settle in the bottom of the bowl is stopped by that screen before entering the pump. I used to use a filter and was stopped all the time when it plugged up. Without a filter, you never have anything to plug up and stop the fuel flow. I quit using them and just empty the bowl when anything is in it. That's my philosophy and it's worked great so far, knock on wood.

I posed the filter question a while back, I haven't been using a filter with my 8BA and it seems to do just fine. I have about 3 or 4 hundred miles on it now with no fuel issues. I've only cleaned the sediment bowl one time so far.

I have about 3000 miles with just sediment bowl with no problems and I have not had to empty it yet.I am using a new tank pump and lines though.
