fuel pump

Guys don't know if this is the place to ask this question on the yr. vehicle. A 1987 ford f-100 runs out of gas and you coast as far as you can while leaving the key on so the steering is not locked. You put 5gallons in it and it will not crank and you do not hear the fuel pump humming at the gas tank. Do you think you could have burned the fuel pump up at the gas tank by leaving the key on when you coasted or would there have been some kinda of shut off timer involved somehow from the factory. Am asking for my brither this happened to him today. What do you think? Thanks for any input

turn the key on look under the hood for the fuel rail find the valve that looks like you would see on a tire push it if you get a stream of fuel the answer is no if no fuel or a trickle you need a pump quick and easy test also ck to see if the pump emergency switch is tripped this is the one that would go off in an accident ck owners book for location

When you first turn the key on the fuel pump runs for a few seconds to "prime" the fuel rail, then power is shut off to the pump. The PCM then looks for a ignition signal (pip signal) to ground the relay when you crank the engine over to start to keep voltage supplied to the fuel pump. So there are a few things that could go wrong. If I remember correctly that year had a problem with the wiring near the relays on the L. fender apron. You just have to get a test light out & start checking the circuit. If you listen under the hood you will hear the relay click twice (on then off) when you turn the key to on. If you can hear it clicking it kind of gives you a direction to go.
