Front drive shaft bushing

I will be removing some material from the front bushing. My question; the hole for the universal joint retaining pin is a half hole off, or maybe 3/16 of an inch. Does this seem like a lot of material to have to get rid of on the bushing, or normal?
I am certain the bushing is seated, because of the change in sound when it landed. All assembled, my gear mesh and pre-loads are perfect.

Seems excessive ! From whom did you acquire the bushing from - not all suppliers utilize the same bushing, I believe.

Depending on the thickness of the lip may or may not be much. It has been suggested in the past to take a skim cut off the outer diameter of the bushing so it is a slip fit in to the tube. That way you can finish the face on a lathe, the brass used in the bushing does not cut well with the tool used in the past to cut babbitt. I would suggest removing the bushing and make sure there is nothing in the area that it seats in. If you have a lathe would then do the cut and fitting. After your done just clean and use locktite to glue it in place.

I just finished facing a bushing this afternoon because the U-joint and drive shaft holes didn't match. Mine were off by about 1/8", so I can believe 3/16".

Hmm, okay. I have been getting all my parts from Langs.
I was going to turn it down in a lathe, so it has to come back out anyway. I'll check the seat, but I am pretty sure it was tidy before I started.

Greg... if youre gonna run a Fun Projects rear pinion bearing (!) you can face off the whole thrust face and just use the sleeve with locktite (an extreme example). I spun mine in the lathe and left about 1/8" of thrust face and made sure it was seated. It can be too long and hang up on rivets and weld lumps in the tube as well. You should also double check that the square was milled back far enough with NO bushing in place (shaft still outa the tube??), and have the U joint holes line up nekked.
I installed a new shaft and went through 3 before I got a good fitting one. If the milling job is shy, youll never close the U joint ball assembly. Anyways, get rid if that old Hyatt and sleeve in the back... The wind it blows Mariah...That's a lot of hot air blowing at the other place Hahahahaha! ws

Mine as found at dis-assembly... NO BUSHING. PERIOD.

AND the busted Hyatt roller bearing from the pinion end...

Fun Projects pinion bearing, modern needle bearings in place of the front bushing is what I used last winter. Sets up really easy, and invisible from the outside.
