for 8 inch rear

My flathead powered 32 has a ford 8 inch rear out of a mustang II. I am changing out the center section to one out of a 66 mustang. The mustang rear has the oil plug in the back of the housing and none in the center section. The rear in my car has the oil plug in the center section and none in the housing. It seems like the easiest soloution is to drill and pipe tap the mustang center section. Anyone ever done this? Or would it be safer to weld a bung into the Banjo housing in my car? Thanks Rich

I assume you are changing the center section because you are changing the gear ratio or your center section is bad. If its a bad ring and pinion, you can put the new gears in your center section.

Other than that, yes you would have to weld in a bung in the housing. I believe that rears with the plug in the housing had a bung. I don't think the housing is thick enough to just drill and tap, but you can check that out.

Bill, that was the advice I was looking for. Welding a bung into the banjo is relatively easy, its just that this is a 32 and the gas tank is inches away. Drilling and tapping the gear housing seems even simpler, was just waiting to hear from someone who did it. Swapping the ring and pinion is a lot of work and defeats the old adage "Poor mans quickchange". If I wanted to punish myself every time I wanted to change ratios, I would have put a chevy 10 or 12 bolt in my car. Thanks Rich

I drilled and tapped my new center section 3/8 npt, right where my old center section had its plug. Very easy, plenty of metal, and best of all my flathead loves the 2.80 gears. Thanks guys, Rich
