A few min. ago i drove my 31 to warm the oil up for a oil change, while under it i ck. the trans. fluid by sticking my finger in it, it was all bubbles and foam. i have been using GL 1500 from Mikes A-fordable, but about two mo's ago i added a small amount [3-4 oz.] of STP, whould that cause it to foam? is foaming normal when the car has just been drivin?.
should i drain it and just go with GL 1500? Thank's.

all trans fluid will foam to a certain extent, i bet if you could measure it the foam wouldnt be more than an inch thick, the cluster gear runs in the oil at the bottom of the trans and picks up the oil there to lube the rest of the trans, so i wouldnt worry about the foam

GL-5 gear lubricants have more anti-foaming agents in them but GL-1 is pretty much mineral based and has the properties of a strait mineral base oil so it foams. The only time foaming is a problem is if the appliance has a vent and it starts foaming out the vent.

STP oil treatment VOC says it is about 60% mineral oil, 30% petroleum distilates, and 10% zinc compounds (ZDDP).

In the Winter 2005 issue of the Model A Times we did an article on 600W transmission fluid. The petrolium chemist suggested using standard 140W fluid 75% and 25% STP because of the foaming problems of the products being sold under the 600W label. After that we found the SPO-288 product from Lubriplate that is designed to operate in a transmission with straight cut gears and works very well.
