flathead willnot fire

It is between the regulator and the carbs but the new reg I bought has different fitting so back to teh store for reducers. Why can't they mack all teh same fuel fitting size.

Surely the fuelling can't be that far out that it won't start??
A cold engine will start and run while grossly over-rich. (That's why you need choke).
You can get an engine to start after tipping fuel down the carb - non starting surely can't be due to mixture.

I'd be looking at ignition / timing.

There's an excellent post above showing a great methodical approach to troubleshooting a non running motor.

Mart.

Checked compression on that engine lately? If it's iffy the engine may run only when warm. Maybe someone already mentioned this...

No help on this one but here is what happened to me.
5 years ago I bought a red 47 Flathead pickup.
Would not run.
I sent the distributor to Dennis Carpenters All rebuilt
New Carburetor
Plugs,wires
Never did get a single pop, cough no nothing from that truck.
I am serious on this one.I could remove the plugs and spray gas down in the cylinders screw plugs back in and still get nothing not a pop.
Compression 80 and above on each cylinder, hot fire Everything was just fine.
I had a couple of friends help some on the project and they basically gave up.
I sold the truck on Ebay for $ 2,675 . It went to NY.
The guy that won it knew it would not run.
He told me later that he did get the Flathead running by filling the cylinders up with oil and that done the trick. He told me the more the engine was ran the better it would start.
I hope you good luck with your motor. I am just killing time this morning and wanted to share this experience with you great guys.

I think the first thing to check is do you have spark.Best way to check is pull the center wire out of dist. Now with key on crank and see if spark jumps to ground about 1/2 inch nice sounding spark. If ok put little gas in each carb "little"Turn electric pump off and try and start. It should fire.Did you have this problem doing nothing to car or playing with it.

I bench test my distributor to make sure I get spark. Ground out the case, 6V to the incoming side. Spin the rotor and make sure the points spark when they open. Coil not required.

changed the regulator and the plugs.Had 6psi on line from elec pump other side of reg had also 6psi when knob was set at 1 1/2 so got a new Holley reg don't like it because you have to use both lines. Will not fill frt carb from the reg to both carbs through teh fuel log I made. Will work on that next but it is running now Thanks for the help

Take the gas cap off, or loosen it. The gas this time of year will pressurize. Some new gas caps are not vented (drake). I had the same problem.
The pressure will blow by the needle/seat and flood the engine. Be sure and change your oil.

Got it running Sat did change the oil, lowered the floats on the Super7's a little and advanced the timing and seems to crank fine now.Guess teh 6psi floded the pulgs but they didn't have gas dripping off them just went to the pan engine has 600 miles or so on the flathead. Will get it out of the garage tomorrow and sync the carbs better
