I am trying to figure out the orginal fender welting for a 1935? First I order something that came which was very shiny and a smooth finish (didn't like it wheather it was correct or not). Then I reorder other welting that was normal rubber, not realizing this really wasn't orginal. Now I got a 3rd. type of welting that has a little bit of a grain to it and maybe has a semigloss finsh.
Can anyone tell me whcih one is correct?
Thanks

Your 3rd sounds close to mine. Some grain, Some shine, what looks like cardboard for the cord, advertised as paintable & Inside material is another color I believe that is the finniest you will get. I have seen the rubber & in some wild colors they are not pretty.

I think the third one sounds about correct. You may want to buy the restoration book from the V-8 club if your doing a as Henry built it restoration. Frank pkny

For the closest to 100% correct I would recommend Roy Nacewicz, http://www.fordscript.com. To quote his catalog:

"FENDER WELTING-our own reproduction of original Ford Pyroxylin cloth
covered, paper twine-filled fender welting. This is machine sewn, in house,
utilizing original materials. The “Box grain” generated on the pyroxilyn cloth is
unique to our product. All other welting on the market is produced from extruded
vinyl and therefore the “box” pattern is not achievable. Our material is produced
on one of the original tools used by one of Ford’s primary suppliers. Likewise, the
twisted paper core is still produced for us by an original Ford supplier."

For everyone else the readily available black vinyl with the plastic tube core should work great (and be damaged less by weather). Colored vinyl is also available.

Roy Nacewicz is the guy to go to. He's friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. He'll hook you up with the correct stuff.
DISCLAMER: I don't own stock in the company, just have had great dealings with Roy.
Good luck!!

I have a semi-gloss welt in my '35. Personally, I would avoid the grain texture type. The "grain" quickly fills with wax which when it dries produces a white residue deep into the grain. Can look kinda "scuzzy" after awhile.

Also, the welt that is between the inner fender and the grill on a '35 is a special type of welt. It is not common fender welt. It is rather thick and wide piece (3 inches) of semi-canvas type material. If you can't come up with any let me know (PM). I do have some.

I bought the welting from Mac's. Still got it. After looking at the plastic cord material, I called Roy and got what I wanted.
