Fender welting question

My 34 is finally in paint and reassembly is starting for week. I have seen many full fender steet rods some with and some without fender welting. I want to do this one time and was wondering what the are merits are using welting. Is it glued in place prior to assembly? Where is it recomended? Again I have seen it in numerous places...front fenders, rear fenders, gas tank cover? What's your thoughts?

I say "use it" as it makes the components fit better and make the car look "finished".
It is not glued in place. I cut a "V' shape in the webbing for the bolts and slide it into position. In general use it where major metal components such as fenders fit to the body.
Looking at the original Ford car serves as a placement guide.

When hanging fenders/running boards, etc. do not snug up the bolts. Follow the above suggestion about cutting the V where the bolt is. When welt is in position, snug the bolts up. No glue needed. I have used small pieces of masking tape to hold the welt in close places until you get it almost snugged up, then pull the tape off and tighten. No welt between running board and fenders on 34, or any of the old Fords with running boards.

The reason for the welting, is that it is an anti-squeek material. You will want to use it.

With the fender off the car, I like to pre fit and cut the welting by using clothes pins to hold it against the fender flange. As Lawson mentioned, cut v slots for the bolts and in some places you also need to make some relief cuts for sharp bends. Once you have it all cut, hang the fender loosley and slide the welting down in to position.

I bought mine for my 40 from Drake already precut to match holes fit great but on my Model A I v'ed it and used excess webbing to make pull tabs to tighten it up before I tighten the bolts up could adjust to fit right the cut the excess off with edge of fender panel
