Engine noise

I have a loud noise coming from engine compartment. This is a 1928 coupe. It's not a knock. It's there intermittently whether driving or standing still, clutch in or out. Sounds like a bearing noise to me. Haven't been able to troubleshoot very well yet cause every time I hear it I'm behind the wheel. Seems to squeal along with the engine rpm's. Changing gear has no effect. Can sometimes get it to stop by changing rpm's. I'm thinking maybe the alternator. I had the generator replaced with alternator when I bought it. Not a new or rebuilt. Also don't have much clutch free play. Could be throw out bearing maybe??? I thought at first it went away under load but have since changed my mind. I guess first step is to try and get some clutch free play. Next would be to loosen belt tension on alternator to see if noise changes. I'm a model A newby. Any ideas would be a big help. Intermittent problems are like unruly kids. They squeal the loudest when you can't do anything about it!
