OK so i have been driving my a arouund and i started hearing a lite tapaaing ( belive its my valve lifter) well I went down to the model a parts store and taked to Vic at PV and he told me all i have to do is open up the side cover and tighten a nut on it. Well i got home and tryed to take off my side cover. Forget it thoughs nuts dont want to move im afrade if braking a stud. so i went to my first marc meet and one of the guys ther told me on my engen the lefters are not adjustible becouse my engen is 100% origonal (besides a new timeing gear) never been opend. What should i do try and open it up and **** around with it or leave it. is there any danger in it causeing damage to the cam, or anything elce?
the car runs grate esaly 60-65 on highway and no problems going up hills.
I just hear the tapping and it concerns me allso when I fisrt start it up I hear clunk clunk clunk wich I think may be a warn babit bering in the front but it goes away after tops 2.5-3 real mississippi seconds.

What is your sugestions?

I say forget about it and drive it. If you listen hard enough you'll hear a thousand odd noises you've never heard before: very few of them mean anything bad is happening, and most of them aren't coming from where you think it is. I say, if you don't notice any effect on the power, it runs smoothly, and it's not leaking anywhere, then it's not a problem that needs immediate fixing.

Most likely you'll end up wondering why you touched it and spend hours figuring out how to get it back to running as good as it did before.

Well, you should find out where the noise is coming from.. If it is in the valve cover is it a loose valve or distributor drive slack.. Originally these didn't have adjustable lifters, but, many have been converted.. A stock engine being driven at 60-65 mph, you won't have to worry about that noise much longer..

the "thump thump thump" when you first start engine is a problen that should be checked, my guess is that its the rear main, thats the one that carries all the flywheel weight(#70) i think, if you dont have adjustable valve lifters it gets diffucult, you will have to pull side plate and head and either face the valve or grind the valve seat to get the correct valve lash, and like was stated in another post, unless you have a death wish for you and your engine keep the speed around 45 to 50 mph

new timing gear ?? what is it made of ? my aluminum gear always make a little noise when i first start it in the morning . as soon as it gets a lil warm it goes away . the aluminum expands quickly & the clearance is then correct ................ steve

Well i dont know what the timeing gear is made of that was done before i got it. and moveing at 60-65 she dose not wine or even rev out just stays stedy nice smooth and the rpms arnt even that high i think if i pushed it she would hit a good 75+ I know the old owner used to change the trany out alot he had this weird set up with two tranys bolted together to pull stumps out of te grownd it was his stump puller on the weekend and when the week came and he needed to go some were he would swich the trany out. He was a mechanical engineer / mecheinist and mechanic so idk if he did something to the trany.

LOL, you know guys, i think he is just having a little fun with us, putting two trans together and then pulling one for a trip home means a lot of work and a lot of different parts, and i havent seen a stock A that would do 80 mph, we have a joker here and hes laughing at us LOL
