Crankin' a V8

Does anybody use a crank to start anymore?? I haven't seen one used in a long time.

Years ago, I had a 35' pickup that was my only means of transportation. The starter went out and I drove it to work for a couple of weeks. Started pretty easily with the crank.

I would not try cranking a V8 with a hand crank. I don't want any broken arms, fingers, or boogered up grills. My 2¢.

If the engine is tuned right, has a good fuel supply, large 6 volt battery cables and wireing and the coil is getting at least 3-1/2 volts through the resistor these engines start on the first stroke of the engine every time. It would start even a little better if that's possible with a hand crank because the coil will get a little more voltage without the starter dropping it some. I wouldn't want to crank one because the crank is a little awkward on most of the V/8s because of the length and bumper. You don't try to spin the engine when cranking, just one good upstroke. Beats walking Lawson. G.M.

I remember my father showing me how when I was around 10 years old. I did start the car then and never considered doing it again. :)

I have a '29 Model A that hasn't run for 35 years, but about once a year, I turn it over with a crank. That's enough for me.

I don't have a crank, but I remember them. Also remember seeing my dad's thumb in a splint when he forgot to fold his thumb along the side of the handle.

Its easier to push my truck 10' and pop the clutch.
