Thanks for the compliment and info, Miker98038. would like to see your car. if you want you can e-mail me direct at mod1890@gci.net don't want to get into trouble by posting too many pictures of early cars since this is the late v8 section.----Jim

Hey, It worked. I will try and get some close up pictures of the dipstick and where it goes in the eng. there is no tube.
The photos of the oil pan sure looks like it's the HD truck 7qt w/ filter version.
In the photos of the dip stick (#8, with the tape measure) what was the measurement from the bottom of the handle to 'full' on the dipstick? I'm guessing about 7 inches ?
The #3 photo showing the hole in the block for the dipstick does look like it has a short sleeve in it.
That hole for the sleeve, or an original full size dipstick tube, only goes part way into the block then gets smaller/the same size as the inside dia of the tube the rest of the way thru.

Since the dipstick you have was made by some commercial outfit, I'd like to think they put a reasonable amount of thought into where it should be marked. Maybe someone decided since it's an extra capacity pan (only) having 5 qts in it would (still) be a sufficient amount for oil circulation and at the same time keep the oil level well below the crank & extra short dipstick hole.
I'll quit bugging you now and let you get back to work on it.

....... Great looking car. I've got a y block in a 32 cabrio.
It's a trend!
I sold the 256 y-block found in my '55 t-bird to a fellow in SC who's putting it in a '33 Ford roadster.

dmsfrr, The measurement from the dipstick handle where it rests on the block to the full mark is 6 1/2 inches.

I think that I will put another 1/2 qt in for a total of 5 1/2 qts. with the short filter. comments or suggestions ?

If the Full mark had been at 7 inches that would make me real nervous. With another half qt in that large size pan I don't think it will raise the oil level on the stick very much but you'll have a good amount of oil in there to work with, and not so much to possibly create a mess at the dipstick.
'In theory' with that pan and a short filter you should be able to go up to 6.25 or 6.5 qts total.

As TedEaton mentioned before, keep an eye out for low oil pressure when stopping, there's a whole bunch of empty space at the front of that pan. The baffle it already has will help a lot.
Because the pan is the large one you have room for a bit more oil if you need it.
I guess finding a good compromise oil level will be a 'work in progress'.

Thanks for your reply. if you look close you can see some one has added a baffle towards the front of the oil pan. it is not something that was put in at the factory. I will run it this way and if I do not get any oil blowing out of the dipstick area, I may put another 1/2 qt. in and bring the level to a full 6qts. with the pick-up close to the bottom of the pan and the front and rear baffle, I think it will have plenty of oil with out risking pumping all the oil up to the top of the eng. at speed. Thanks.-----Jim
