How can I tell if the fuel pump is just bad?

I took out the bends and the inline filter before the pump, and it brought down the sound a bit.

I had a Carter 6 volt fuel pump in my 1928 Roadster because I was running a Weber downdraft carb and the engine would starve for fuel without a pump. After installing the Carter, I was annoyed at how loud it was. I am afraid that's the nature of beast and something you will just have to learn to live with.

i have that pump in one of my cars.
it is hooked to the stock carb. for which i made a bypass to lower the pressure at the carb ( the regulator was not enough)
with the car not running but the pump is running it is very noticeable. but once the car is running and driving i don't notice it. i get lots of road noise which seems to be what model A is all about
mine is under the floor boards which have a mat on top.

You could try using some thin rubber strips like an old inner tube to help insulate it between the metal frame is mounted to that should quiet it up some.

this is a good idea.
i used a pc of thick rubber behind the pump bracket when i mounted mine. maybe that is why its not so annoying .

Thanks all! The one I bought off ebay was $48, and from what I hear, at that price, it could be a knockoff, old stock, or return. So, I bought a new one at the going price from a reputable automotive dealer. I'm going to mount the new one on a rubber strip!

It is quiet obvious you never spent time in the passenger seat of a M G A . Ours would rattle the change in your pocket. Lots of trial and error with various pieces of soft rubber.
