Burnt wires

Hey guys, what would cause the 2 wires behind my ammeter to get so hot the insulation melts? All connections were tight, no bare wires or shorts. Could the generator be putting out too much? Thanks
I'm running a 6 volt system and just getting my feet wet working on the family A.
