Brake return springs?

Hey Guys,
I'm installing break return springs and I received two (short) for the EB and four long ones. No problem with the setup on the radius rods in the rear (one EB and one service) but where do the other long springs reside? Front breaks make sense but their are no collars on the rods and doesn't look like any place to install the springs on the frame.
Thanks again for your help:confused:

The springs for the front brakes set just about in the middle of the rods.. Seems like you must have repro rods, there should be a collar on them and there should be a bracket on the frame.. The brakes should work without them, they just hold the rods in-line and keep them whipping and rattling around..

Thanks Pat,
I have new return springs on all the shoes. Probably the rears are more critical anyway. Someone probably took the front brackets off. I don't think I've ever seen them on the front before anyway.
Thanks Again!

They work in conjunction with the shoe springs to retract the shoes and actually work at returning the pedal and releasing the brake light switch, they also act as anti-rattle devices as a secondary purpose . I have never seen a model A brake rod without the upset to utilize the spring.

Maybe...just maybe Pete, you have a very, very early Model A Frame as the very first frames did not have those brackets for the brake return springs.

They were added, I think, sometime in November 1927.

They came in two styles, Forged up through about September 1928 then stamped steel after that.

By the way, have you seen the two stamped out areas on the ends of the upper side of the center crossmember that kind of look like a leaf? Those stampings made "slugs" for that part A-2504 Front Brake Rod Spring Bracket.

So depending on what year your frame is, then that is what you need. Or not!

I'll take a look. I think I was looking in the wrong places. Whatever, it seems like the front ones were secondary to a healthy set of break springs. I don't remember them on my 31 way back when.

Thanks Pluck,
Pete
