brake drum removal on AA

We could sure use some ideas on getting a stuck rear brake drum off a 1930 AA truck. We have used heat and a couple different wheel pullers to no avail. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Bill

sometimes the key gets rolled when the trucks are bucking a heavy load. If its at all possible, drive (or tow with a load) the truck around the block with the nut loose to try to jar the key loose.

My AA rear hub puller is a large steel cone it bolts to all 5 lug nuts. It has a large fine thread bolt at the top which has a smaller sliding bolt in its centre. You wind up the large bolt hard then bop the centre bolt head. Works every time (so far) .The trick I have found is to heat the hub to very very hot with oxy/acetylene but not cherry red or you could deform the hub. You might cook the seal but they are available and you would most likely would replace it anyway.

Good luck with the hub. They can be really stubborn on AA's - maybe because of the above mentioned reason and maybe also because of the larger axle diameter and therefore the larger surface area the hub can be stuck to.

I had one like that and thought I could remove it with a knock-off type puller. I banged on that until I thought I was going to go mental and it wouldn't so much as budge. Even heating it up with an oxy/acetylene torch didn't help. Then I got a vintage puller that threads onto the hub where the hub cap fits. The puller has a cut in the side and a bolt that allows you to clamp it to those threads. I put it on, clamped it tight, screwed the center bolt down tight but not so tight that you'd strip either the threads for the bolt in the puller or on the hub. Then I hit it with an 8 pound hammer a couple of times and off came the hub. I was amazed.

Since you've tried several different wheel pullers already, maybe this won't work as well for you or maybe I was just lucky. If you can figure a way to keep the axle nut on but loose and put a hub puller on AND drive it around the block a few times, maybe the combination of all would finally work. Be sure to let us know how you make out in case we are faced with something like the in the future.

Is the hub actually stuck on the axle,or is it really hung up on the brakes? In other words, can you turn it freely? I have always been able to devise something to break it free from the axle, but when the drum has welded itself to the shoes that has been the absolute worst.

Good point, Keith. I knew one guy who had that exact scenario and wound up having to cut the drum off because he couldn't free it from the brake shoes.
