adapter rings for wire wheels

I found out this morning that I need adapter rings to mount my Kelsey wire wheels to my later hydraulic drums on my 33 . Anyone know where I might find something like what I need? Dennis

If you are running spoke wheels on a '40-'48 drum you will need these spacers to take up the gap between the wheel and the drum and create an inner mounting surface. If needed, I have some pictures to show you what I am talking about.

At any rate, find yourself a chunk of 4" I.D. iron pipe. Take it to a machine shop and have them set it up in a lathe and cut the rings off at 0.195-0.200 thickness. Epoxy to the back of the wheel as shown and you are good to go.

The rings are simple to make, in fact, these rings were the first thing I made back in my old high school machine shop. Believe me that was a l-o-o-o-o-g time ago....!

Hope this helps

Tom

Speedway sell a different type that are centred by the studs, so they're always centred.
Be aware that spoked wheels will only fit over the drums with outside hubs. The drums with inside hubs (pickup) will require an alloy spacer about 1 1/4" thick. Dont ask me how I know..... :o

As Flatheadfan said, you can make them yourself by cutting rings from 4" galvanized or black iron water pipe. I've made several sets for my cars and also for my friends who needed them.
There was a very good article on the need for these support rings in Street Rodder magazine back in April of 2002. I have a copy of that article. If you would like to read it send me a PM and I will send you a copy.

John, what issue of Street Rodder is the article in?

The article was called "Gettin' Wired" Installing '35 spokes on '40-'48 drums. It was in the April 2002 issue of Street Rodder. I was originally thinking it was in a mid 80's issue. Great article.
