8ba is on test stand and all i have is a 12 battery, can i use a dropping resistor to get correct voltage to dist@ what ohm,s should i use..i think the ohms was on here a while back but cant find it again. Dp
The distributor does not have a specific voltage requirement, the coil is what determines the voltage. What voltage or type of coil do you have on your motor?
The primary ignition needs approx a 3-4 ohm drop in the circuit.
On a engine stand i would use a 1.5 ohm resistor ( buy one for a early chevrolet we use a standard motor products part number # RU11T).
The ignition coil needs to be 1.5 ohm as well. ( 70 chevrolet truck coil with a 350 engine usually works)
Combined resistance is approx 3 ohms, and 3 ohms divided into 12 volts is 4 amps current thru the primary. Should work very well.
Another thought is to use a Bosch Blue coil with 4 ohms resistance and then no resistor is needed. 4 ohms into 12 volts is 3 amps . This is even better for your application.
If you are going with 12 volts and using a 6 volt coil you need a big wattage resister. If you could buy one it would be big. Power=
3amps x 6 volts= 18 watts.plus you need the under dash one .5 and that drops 1.5 volts leaving 4.5 at coil.
As others have said buy a 12 volt coil and matching resister, and not removeing the one under dash you lose 1.5 volt under dash.
