does a 68 ford use a non vented gas cap as standard equipment.once in awhile I smell gas fumes
I checked this over and cant find a leak.mine isnt vented and gets alot of pressure in the tank. just wondering if thats the problem

Suggest that you examine the area around the filler for possible leak into passenger area. Also the drain hose which should carry any overflow to the ground.
Another source could be the sender unit in the tank. Sometime these leak. Not sure about your car, but a lot of the 50's Fords had a plate in the trunk floor for access to the sender unit. 60's might be the same.
